Add to initial Work/Home area One of three choices in the Analysis tab's Modify Work/Home Area from Step 2 option of Step 3: Advanced Area Selection. This option merges a second (possibly noncontiguous) selection area with the initial selection area made in Step 2: Study Area Selection. This is a logical union. The combined area represents the new study area for the user-defined analysis. Advanced Area Selection Step 3 in the Analysis tab. This step allows users to define a second selection area and use this new area to either a) limit the destinations from/to the first selection area (Create Paired Home/Work Area), or b) add, intersect, or subtract this area from the first selection area. The default choice is to skip this step and proceed with only the first selection area. Advanced Selection Features Row in the Analysis Settings and Report Settings tables that appears after an analysis using the Advanced Selection options has been completed. If the Layer Selection Tool is used in Step 3 of the Analysis tab, the names of the selected features are listed in this row. The row will not appear if Step 3 of the Analysis tab is skipped. Also, if a different selection tool is used in Step 3, this row will say "Only available for filter selections.". Advanced Selection Layer Row in the Analysis Settings and Report Settings tables that appears after an analysis using the Advanced Selection options has been completed. If the Layer Selection Tool is used in Step 3 of the Analysis tab, the layer type (i.e. Cities/Towns, Counties, Zip Codes, States) is listed in this row. The row will not appear if Step 3 of the Analysis tab is skipped. Also, if a different selection tool is used in Step 3, this row will say "No filter layer selected.". Age In Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab, the set of Labor Market Segment options dealing with worker age. Select one of the three age ranges (30 or younger, 31 to 54, or 55 or Older) to create a map overlay and report showing only that segment of the workforce. All Jobs See Total All Jobs in Report Terms. All Private Jobs See Total Private Jobs in Report Terms. All Placenames The default setting in the drop-down box of the the Search tab. With this setting active, the user-entered placename will be matched against all but three geographic layers available in OnTheMap. Layers that are supported under this setting include: States, Counties, Cities/Towns, Military Bases, One-Stop Career Centers, Zip Codes (ZCTA), Metropolitan/Micropolitan Areas (CBSA), Workforce Investment Areas (WIA), County Subdivisions, WIRED Regions (Gen. 1, 2, and 3), 110th Congressional Districts, Unified/Elementary School Districts, Secondary School Districts, Alaska Native Regional Corp. (ANRC), Tribal Lands, and Tribal Subdivisions. To search for specific geographic features in layers not included in this list (Upper and Lower State Legislative Districts and Traffic Analysis Zones), users must select the particular layer from the drop-down box before searching. All Workers The default parameter for the Labor Market Segments section of Step 1: Data Settings within the Analysis tab. When this option is selected, the analysis includes all segments of the workforce, as opposed to individual segments (e.g. age, earnings, or industry). Analysis A tab in the Control Panel that allows users to perform Area Profile and Shed Analyses to produce map overlays and reports of where workers live and where people work. The Analysis tab has four steps through which users can select labor segments, study area(s), and types of analyses. In OnTheMap, the term analysis generally refers to a map overlay and report combination. Analysis Settings A section of the Results tab that summarizes the choices made in the four steps of the Analysis tab. This data also appears at the bottom of each report, where it is called Report Settings. Animate A button in the Overlay Controls box of the Results tab. If multiple years were selected for an analysis, the user can use the OnTheMap application to display the overlays automatically in sequence. Next to the Animate button, users should choose one or both of the Points/Thermals check boxes to animate. The user should then click on the Animate button to start the sequence. Clicking on the Stop button with stop the animation sequence. To speed the animation transitions, it is recommended that prior to animating the user should enable all the points/thermals layers to be seen in the animation. Area Profile Analysis One of two analysis types available in OnTheMap. The map overlay produced from this analysis displays the locations and distribution of workers employed in the selection area (Workplace Area) or living in the selection area (Home/Residential Area). A demographic profile of these workers appear in the accompanying report, called an Area Profile Report. This option is available in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. Area Profile Map Overlay The map overlay associated with the Area Profile Analysis, it is one of two map overlay types available in OnTheMap Version 3. The Area Profile Map Overlay displays the locations and distribution of workers (using points and thermals) employed in the selection area (Workplace Area) or living in the selection area (Home/Residential Area). This map is available by choosing the Area Profile Analysis option in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. Area Profile Report The report associated with an Area Profile Analysis, it is one of two report types available in OnTheMap. This report provides a demographic profile of workers employed in the selection area (Work Area Profile option) or living in the selection area (Home Area Profile option). The profile shows a breakout of workers by age, earnings, and industry groupings (2-digit NAICS sectors). Additionally, Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI) can appear at the bottom of this report, but only in analyses of a non-paired Workplace Area looking at All Workers of the workforce. The report is available by choosing the Area Profile Analysis option in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. Back One of two buttons used for navigating between the four steps in the Analysis tab. The Back button takes the user to the previous step of the Analysis tab. Browser A generic term to describe computer software used to access Internet-based websites. Examples include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Firefox. OnTheMap is designed to perform equally well with multiple browsers. See System Requirements. Clear Overlays One of four buttons in the top right corner of the map viewer. The Clear Overlays button clears from the map viewer all current map overlays, including Points, Thermals, Selection, and Selection Fill. This is equivalent to unchecking all the boxes in the Overlay Controls box in the Results tab. Users can turn these overlays back on by clicking the check boxes in the Overlay Controls box in the Results tab. Clear Selection A button in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. Click on Clear Selection button to immediately clear the current selected area(s) from the map view. Color Key Row in the Overlay Controls box of the Results tab. The primary color used to differentiate each year of data is displayed in this row (fuchsia for 2006, black for 2005, red for 2004, green for 2003, and blue for 2002). Commute Shed Analysis A Shed Analysis displaying and reporting on where workers who live within the selected area are employed. A Commute Shed Analysis consists of both a Commute Shed Map and a Commute Shed Report. The option for selecting a Commute Shed Analysis is available in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab if Home/Residential Area is chosen in Step 1: Data Settings. Commute Shed Map A Shed Analysis map showing where workers who live within the selected area are employed. The selection area (Home/Residence Area) is highlighted in the map. Employment locations and job concentrations appear as points and/or thermals in the map, depending upon the selected map viewing options. Commute Shed Report A Shed Analysis report showing where workers who live within the selected area are employed. Workers' employment locations can be aggregated in up to three geographic "rollup" areas. The top ten (or top five if state is selected) employment areas are shown for each of the three rollup geographies selected, as well as the total number of resident-workers living in the selection area. Control Panel The panel at the left-hand side of the OnTheMap Version 3 browser window. The Control Panel provides a series of tabs through which users can search for geographic features, view a map key, control which map layers and labels are visible, and generate and control output of data analyses. Create Paired Work/Home Area An option in Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This choice allows users to create a second selection area to limit by destination the group of workers under analysis. If Home/Residential Area is chosen in Step 1: Data Settings, users will select a Work area in Step 3. If Work Area is chosen in Step 1: Data Settings, users will select a Home area in Step 3. Both analysis types are available in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab, although they are now called Paired Work/Home Area Profile Analysis and Paired Labor/Commute Shed Analysis. Data Settings Step 1 in the Analysis tab. Lets users select the type of study area (Home/Work), year(s), job type, and Labor Market Segment for analysis. Destination In the context of home-work pairings, the term destination refers to the other half of the home-work pairing from the origin. For example, if the origin is a home area, then the destination is a work area, but if the origin is a work area, then the destination is a home area. Regardless of whether the user selects Home or Work area in the Live or Work choice in Step 1: Data Settings, the destination is the area not selected. So in a Labor Shed Analysis, the destinations are home locations, and in a Commute Shed Analysis, the destinations are work locations. See the definition for Origin for more information. Donut Selection Tool One of seven geographic selection options in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This tool allows the user to use a selection area defined by inner and outer circles, with user-specified radii. The selection only includes the area between the two circles. For more information on the selection tools available in OnTheMap Version 3, please read How To Use the OnTheMap Selection Tools [PDF, 876KB]. Earnings In Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab, the set of Labor Market Segment options dealing with worker earnings. Select one of the three earnings ranges ($1,200/mo or Less, $1,201/mo to $3,400/mo, or Greater than $3,400/mo) to create a map overlay and report showing only that segment of the workforce. Edit Shape In the Freehand tool in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab, Edit Shape is a method for editing an already drawn freehand shape. Activate the Edit shape radio button, and then left-click in the freehand shape to view all of the existing vertices. Two types of vertices appear around the outline of the shape: a) solid circles that form the outline of the shape, and b) the semi-transparent circles in between each solid circle that are potential new vertices of the shape. Using your mouse, drag and drop current vertices, delete current vertices with the delete or D key, or left-click on one of the semi-transparent circles/vertices to add it to the shape. Left-click in the map viewer or control panel to save changes made to the freehand shape. End The end radius of the Plume selection. A required field of the Plume option in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. The end radius must be specified by the user in miles. Radii with decimal places are allowed, although the minimum zoom scale in the Map Viewer will limit the practical resolution. Entry Page The initial webpage that is viewed upon entry of OnTheMap Version 3. The Entry Page gives access to both the mapping application and text-only tool, as well as to documentation and to other helpful links. Excel (XLS) One of the Report Output Options available in the middle of the Results tab. Clicking this link will open the report in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet or allow the user to save the spreadsheet file on his/her local computer for later viewing. Freehand Selection Tool One of seven geographic selection options in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This tool allows users to draw an arbitrary polygon in the map viewer and use the aggregated Census blocks within that polygon as the selection. The freehand outline can be edited by activating the Edit Shape radio button and left-clicking once inside the freehand selection area. At this point users can drag vertices, delete vertices, or create new vertices. See the definition for Edit Shape for more information. For more information on the selection tools available in OnTheMap Version 3, please read How To Use the OnTheMap Selection Tools [PDF, 876KB]. Hide/Show Tabs A tool button on the top right of the map viewer. This button allows users to toggle the Control Panel (the 5 tabs on the left side of the browser window) in and out of view. Each time this button is clicked, the map viewer will refresh to fill the available space with as much of the map view as possible. Home/Residential Area One of two choices for the Live or Work option in Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab. Choosing this option will allow users to perform a Home Area Profile Analysis or a Commute Shed Analysis. Home Area Profile Analysis See Area Profile Analysis. Home Area Selection See Study Area Selection. Industry Class In Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab, the set of Labor Market Segment options dealing with industry classification. Select one of the three industry groupings (Goods Producing, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, or All Other Services) to create a map overlay and report showing only that segment of the workforce. The 2-digit NAICS codes associated with each industry class are as follows: Goods Producing includes NAICS 11, 21, 23, and 31-33, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities includes NAICS 42, 44-45, 48-49, and 22, and All Other Services includes the remaining twelve 2-digit NAICS industry sectors. See the U.S. Census Bureau's documentation on NAICS for more information on these industry sectors. Inner The inner radius of a Donut selection. A required field of the Donut option in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. The inner radius must be specified by the user in miles. Radii with decimal places are allowed, although the minimum zoom scale in the Map Viewer will limit the practical resolution. Intersect with initial Work/Home area One of three choices in the Modify Work/Home Area from Step 2 option of Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This option selects the region covered by both the first selection area made in Step 2: Study Area Selection and the second selection area made in Step 3. This is a logical intersection. The overlapping area represents the full study area for the user-defined analysis. Job Type An option in Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab to select the type of jobs that will be used for either an Area Profile Analysis or a Shed Analysis. The four types of jobs are All Jobs, Primary Jobs, All Private Jobs, and Private Primary Jobs. See Report Terms for full definitions. Label The heading for a list of checkboxes in the Layers tab. The check boxes under this heading control the labels of each layer. As soon as a check box is checked or unchecked by the user, the OnTheMap application immediately loads the layer's labels or removes them from the map viewer. If the checkbox is grayed out, then the option is not available. If a Layer Title is grayed and italicized, then it is not available for viewing at the current zoom level. Labor Market Segments An option in Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab to select one of nine labor segments (or all segments) to limit the scope of jobs in an Area Profile Analysis or Shed Analysis. See Age, Earnings, and Industry Class segment definitions for more information. Labor Shed Analysis A Shed Analysis displaying and reporting upon where workers who are employed in a user-defined selection area live. A Labor Shed Analysis consists of both a Labor Shed Map and a Labor Shed Report. The option for selecting a Labor Shed Analysis is available in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab if Workplace Area is chosen in Step 1: Data Settings. Labor Shed Map A Shed Analysis map showing where workers who are employed in a user-defined area live. The selection area (the area in which workers are employed) is highlighted in the map. The locations of residences appear as points and/or thermals in the map, depending upon the selected map viewing options. Labor Shed Report A Shed Analysis report showing where workers who are employed in a user-defined area live. Workers' residence locations can be aggregated in up to three geographic "rollup" areas. The top ten (or top five if state is selected) employment areas are shown for each of the three rollup geographies selected, as well as the total number of workers employed in the selection area. Layer The heading of a list of checkboxes in the Layers tab. The check boxes under this heading control the graphical representations (points, lines, outlines, or filled areas) of each layer. As soon as a check box is checked or unchecked by the user, the OnTheMap application immediately loads the layer to or removes it from the Map Viewer. If the checkbox is grayed out, then the option is not available. If a Layer Title is grayed and italicized, then it is not available for viewing at the current zoom level. Layer Selection Tool One of seven geographic selection options in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This tool allows the user to select an area by picking one or more features in a particular map layer. The user chooses the layer type (County, Place, Census Tract, etc.) from a list and left-clicks once inside each feature in the map to be included in the selection area by using the Point(s) method. Alternatively, users can use the Line method by dragging the mouse, with left control button depressed, across the map to select the feature(s) within that layer to be included in the selection area. For more information on the selection tools available in OnTheMap Version 3, please read How To Use the OnTheMap Selection Tools [PDF, 876KB]. Layer Title The heading of a list of names of available geographical layers in the Layers tab. These layers can be turned on or off (made viewable or not) in the Map Viewer by clicking in the appropriate check boxes of the Layers tab. If a Layer Title is grayed and italicized, then it is not available for viewing at the current zoom level. Layers A tab in the Control Panel that allows users to turn on or off specific map layers (County, Place, Census Tract, etc.) and their labels. OnTheMap uses existing geographic data sources and definitions. In particular, the standard geographies are derived from the Census Bureau's TIGER/Line files. Additional information about TIGER geography may be found at http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/index.html. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration (ETA) provides the definitions of specific workforce and economic development area, such as the Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) regions. LED collects the definitions of Workforce Investment Areas (WIA)/Workforce Investment Board (WIB) areas from partner states. For more information on individual layers, see the Table of Contacts for Geographic Sources. Legends A section of the Map Key tab that shows symbols for all of the reference and background geography layers shown in the map viewer as well as the data ranges for analysis overlays (points/thermals) in the map. Line In the Layer Select, Ring/Buffer, and Plume tools, Line is a method for selecting a geographic area within Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. Using the mouse, draw a line by dragging the mouse across the map viewer. With the Layer Select tool, the drawn line will select all features (of the desired layer) it crosses in the map viewer. With the Ring/Buffer and Plume tool, the drawn line will be buffered according to the user-defined radius to create the selection area. Link to Me A tool button on the top right of the map viewer. When this button is clicked, all of the information currently displayed in the map viewer and control panel will be sent and stored in the URL of the user's web browser. Live or Work An option in Step 1: Data Settings within the Analysis tab, which allows users to select the type of study area upon which the analysis will focus. The two options are "Workplace Area" and "Home/Residential Area". If "Workplace Area" is selected, then the user will be able to perform Work Area Profile Analyses or Labor Shed Analyses. If "Home/Residential Area" is selected, then the user will be able to perform Home Area Profile Analyses or Commute Shed Analyses. Map Key A tab in the Control Panel that shows users the North Arrow, the Scale Bar, and Legends for map reference layers and overlay (points and thermals) data. Map Precision A tool located at the bottom of Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab that allows the user to select the precision of points and thermals displayed in map overlays generated from both analysis types. Options include Automatic, Block, Tract, County, or No Map. The default setting is Automatic, which determines the map precision based on the number of Census Blocks selected in the analysis (origin). If less than 5,000 blocks are selected, the automatic map precision will display each point as a Census Block, if between 5,000 and 200,000 blocks are selected, each point will represent one Census Tract, if between 200,000 and 2,000,000 blocks are selected, each point will represent one county, and for analyses with greater than 2,000,000 blocks selected, no map overlays will be displayed. Each of the precision levels produce slightly different map overlay outputs, and users are encouraged to find the precision level that best illustrates the data in the map viewer. Block-level precision will provide the most spatial detail but county-level precision (or the No Map option) will generate in the shortest amount of time. Map Overlay/Report Step 4 in the Analysis tab. Lets users choose the type of analysis (Area Profile Analysis or Shed Analysis) and the geographic rollup layers if the Shed Analysis option is selected. Map Viewer The main window in the OnTheMap application. The map viewer shows both the map (user-chosen layers and labels) as well as the map overlays (points/thermals) generated by users' analyses. Modify Line In the Layer Select, Ring/Buffer, and Plume tools (in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab), Modify Line is a method for editing an already drawn line. Activate the Modify Line radio button, and then left-click on the line to view the existing vertices. Two types of vertices appear along the drawn line: a) solid circles that form the outline of the line, and b) the semi-transparent circles in between each solid circle that are potential new vertices of the line. Drag and drop vertices, delete vertices with the delete or D key, or click on one of the semi-transparent circles/vertices to add it to the line. Left-click in the map viewer or control panel to save changes made to the line. Modify Work/Home Area from Step 2 An option in Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab that allows users to select an additional area used to modify the original selection performed in Step 2. There are three options for having the second area selection modify the first, Add to initial Work/Home area (makes both polygons the selected area), Intersect with initial Work/Home area (makes the intersection of the two polygons the selected area), and Subtract from initial Work/Home area (removes any portion of the first selection area that overlaps with the second selection area). Name Search Results The list of results generated from using the Search tool. Any or part of the user-entered placename is matched against all of the supported geographic layers (Cities/Towns, Metropolitan/Micropolitan areas, ZIP Codes, etc.). Results are grouped by layer type, with the most commonly used geographic layers near the top. If no matches are found, the Name Search Results will attempt to return results that "sound like" the search term within a reduced set of commonly used layers. For more information, see the definition for Search. For details about the geographic names that appear in the the Name Search Results, see the Table of Contacts for Geographic Sources. Navigation One of seven geographic selection options in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This option permits the user to reuse up to five previous selection areas from prior analyses. With the Reuse Earlier Selection option, users can run a series of maps and reports without having to redraw or reselect the geographic area. Selection area histories are not saved beyond the current browser session. For more information on the selection tools available in OnTheMap Version 3, please read How To Use the OnTheMap Selection Tools [PDF, 876KB]. Ring/Buffer Selection Tool One of seven geographic selection options in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This option allows the user to draw a point or line and select all the area within a specified distance of the point/line. If a point is drawn, then the buffered area will be a circle. If a line is drawn, then the shape of the buffered area will depend upon the shape of the line. Buffer distances are measured in miles. For more information on the selection tools available in OnTheMap Version 3, please read How To Use the OnTheMap Selection Tools [PDF, 876KB]. Rollups An option when the user selects Shed Analysis (Commute/Labor) in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. Users specify three geographical aggregations for the destination of workers whose home area was selected first in a Commute Shed Analysis or whose work area was selected first in a Labor Shed Analysis. The Commute/Labor Shed report shows the top ten destinations within each selected rollup layer, except for States, which shows only the top five destinations. Scale A scale bar located on the Map Key tab indicating distances (in miles) on the map. The scale changes as the user zooms in and out of the map viewer. Search A tab in the Control Panel, which provides a tool for quickly finding a specific area by matching a user-provided name. The Search tool will try to match on any of the supported geographical layers (Cities/Towns, Metropolitan/Micropolitan areas, ZIP Codes, etc.). The Search tool can match all or part of a name and if no matches are found, it will return results that "sound like" the search term with a reduced set of commonly used layers. Users can limit the search to a specific geographic layer by selecting it in the dropdown box. The default is to search all layers. Results are listed at the bottom of the Search tab. Clicking on a name in the result will zoom the map viewer to that area. The Search tool is also available from the OnTheMap Entry Page. (Note: Colloquial or neighborhood names may not be included in the supported geographies.) Selected Block Count Row in the Analysis Settings and Report Settings tables that appears after an analysis has been completed. The value is the exact number of Census Blocks selected as the study area in Step 2 of the Analysis tab. Selection Area A user-defined geographic area that serves as the basis for the analysis maps and reports. These areas are defined by using one of the selection tools (Layer, Freehand, Ring/Buffer, Donut, Plume, Reuse Earlier Selection). The selection area outline will be highlighted in the map viewer. Selection Fill An option in the Overlay Controls box of the Results tab. This option displays/removes a cross-hatched fill overlay for the selection area(s). The dark orange outline with a yellow center always represents the area of analysis (the origin). The dark blue outline with a red center represents the second selection area (the destination) in a Paired Area Analysis, or the unused portion of the selection areas when one of the Modify Area options was selected in Step 3 of the Analysis tab. Shed Analysis One of two analysis types available in OnTheMap. The overlay map produced from this analysis displays the destination of workers who are either employed or live in the selected area. Shed Analyses include both Commute Shed Analyses and Labor Shed Analyses, which are differentiated by whether a home or work location is the Study Area Selection. A Shed Analysis includes both a Shed Map and a Shed Report. The option for selecting a Commute/Labor Shed Analysis is available in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. The choice between Labor Shed or Commute Shed is determined by the Live or Work option in Step 1: Data Settings within the Analysis tab. Shed Map The map associated with the Shed Analysis, it is one of two map types available in OnTheMap. The Shed map displays the destination of workers who are either employed in (Labor Shed Map) or live in (Commute Shed Map) the selected area. This map is available by choosing the Commute/Labor Shed Analysis option in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. The choice between Labor Shed or Commute Shed is determined by the Live or Work option in Step 1: Data Settings within the Analysis tab. Shed Report The report associated with a Shed Analysis, it is one of two report types available in OnTheMap. This report provides a geographic breakdown of destinations for workers employed in the selection area (Labor Shed Report) or workers living in the selection area (Commute Shed Report). The geographic destinations are summarized in three "rollup" layers. The rollup layers are user selectable, and can include any of the supported geographies (Counties, Cities/Towns, Census Tracts, ZIP Codes, etc.). The choice of rollup layers is made in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab, when selecting the Commute/Labor Shed Analysis Option. The choice between Labor Shed or Commute Shed is determined by the Live or Work option in Step 1: Data Settings within the Analysis tab. Skip this Step An option in Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This option is the default and should remain the choice for Step 3 unless users wish to create a Paired Area Analysis or to make a complex modification to the Study Area Selection from Step 2. Start The starting radius of the Plume selection. A required field of the Plume option in Step 2: Study Area Selection and Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. The starting radius must be specified by the user in miles. Radii with decimal places are allowed, although the minimum zoom scale in the Map Viewer will limit the practical resolution. Study Area Selection Step 2 in the Analysis tab. Lets users define a primary selection area for either an Area Profile Analysis or a Shed Analysis. If the Live or Work choice is Home, then the Study Area Selection will be a Home area. If the Live or Work choice is Work, then the Study Area Selection will be a Work area. Study Selection Features Row in the Analysis Settings and Report Settings tables that appears after an analysis has been completed. If the Layer Selection Tool is used to select the area of analysis, the names of the selected features are listed in this row. The row will not appear if a different selection tool is used. Study Selection Layer Row in the Analysis Settings and Report Settings tables that appears after an analysis has been completed. If the Layer Selection Tool is used to select the area of analysis, the layer type (i.e. Cities/Towns, Counties, Zip Codes, States) is listed in this row. If a different selection tool is used, the row will say "No layer selected.". Subtract from initial Work/Home area One of three choices in the Modify Work/Home Area from Step 2 option of Step 3: Advanced Area Selection of the Analysis tab. This option selects only the region of the first selection (from Step 2: Study Area Selection) that is not covered by the second selection made in Step 3. The remaining non-overlapping area from the first selection is the final selection area. Text-Only Mode A text-only version of the application accessible from the "Jump to" dropdown on the OnTheMap Entry Page. This utility permits users to produce Shed and Area Profile Reports for any supported geographical layer without having to interact with the map viewer. Thermals Several display options in the Results tab by which users can show job density/concentration in an overlay that represent workers' employment areas or residence areas. The shaded thermal clusters use a spatial modeling and area averaging technique that calculates workers per square mile across adjacent blocks and neighborhoods. Thermals have several levels of shading and the ranges for the shadings are available in the Map Key tab after an analysis has been run and the thermals are activated in the Results tab. Thermals can be generated at three levels of spatial detail based upon the Map Precision settings in Step 4: Map Overlay/Report of the Analysis tab. The three levels are Census Block, Census Tract, or county. Thermals based upon Census Blocks provide the most detail but thermals based upon counties will generate in the shortest amount of time. Work Area Profile Analysis See Area Profile Analysis. Work Area Selection See Study Area Selection. Workplace Area One of two choices for the Live or Work option in Step 1: Data Settings of the Analysis tab. Choosing this option will allow users to perform a Work Area Profile Analysis or a Labor Shed Analysis. Year(s) An option Step 1: Data Settings within the Analysis tab to select the year of data that will be displayed in the map overlay and report. Most states have data available for all five years (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006), with the exception of Arizona (missing 2002, 2003, and 2004), Mississippi (missing 2002, 2003, and 2006), and Arkansas (missing 2002). States and territories not currently included on OnTheMap Version 3 are Ohio, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Zoom Ladder Tool Located in the top left of the map viewer, the zoom ladder allows users to control precisely their zoom level by clicking directly on the ladder or on the '+' and '-' buttons at either end. Users can also click on any of the four direction arrows above the zoom ladder to pan the map in that direction. Zoom to Selection A link in the Overlay Controls box of the Results tab that - when clicked - zooms to Map Viewer to the selection area(s). Is a term or a definition missing?
